Interpretation is the process of transfer and interpreting of a non-fixed verbal text from the source to the target langauge, performed with the support of linguistic and non-lingustic means (Baumann, 2013:35). Today, we define interpretation not only as transfer of the meaning, but also of the culture of the speaker to the recipients of the interpretation product. But interpreters were used as facilitators between cultures with centuries.
According to Bowen (1998:43) interpretation as a process is mentioned for the first time in the Old Testament (Joseph and his brothers) in the III. century BC due to the dragomans, which are mentioned by Wills (1998:21) to have been used as interpreters at the beginning of the XX. century. Interpreters were used for faciliatation of the trade with Asia, mainly for Chinese language, but also by the ancient Greeks and Romans for better communication in their civil administration. Mr. Helmut Johanni wrote an article about the profession interpreter on December 3rd 1926 in the Deutschen Allgemeinen Zeitung. Nevertheless, conference interpreters existed even earlier, and according to the literature we could say that Fergusson was the first interpreter mentioned as such, and working at the First Interamerican Conference in 1889.
Since then, interpreters’ work is constantly changing adapting to the needs for new interpretation modes and the use of sophisticated technical equipment, and even AI.
